Risk Factors associated with the Development of Prostate Câncer: a Review of the Brazilian Literature

Abstract

Objective: To analyze studies on risk factors associated with the development of prostate cancer (PC) in Brazil. Material and Method: The search for original case-control, cross-sectional and cohort studies over the last 10 years was carried out in the Google Scholar, LILACS, Medline and SciELO databases. The following descriptors were used: "Prostate Neoplasms"; "Risk Factors" and "Brazil" and their synonyms. The search found a total of 3.454 studies and of these, 12 publications were included which met the criteria for the synthesis of this review. Results: The articles selected originated in the following regions of Brazil, the Northeast region presented six studies of those selected, three in the Southeast, two in the South and one in the Midwest. The sample size varied between 23 and 662 participants. Of the 12 articles analyzed, most were descriptive studies (N= 09), comparing possible risk factors in groups of patients based on the identification of risk factors in international studies. Other case-control studies (N= 03) applied analytical statistical methods to identify risk factors. Family history, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, African ancestry and long-term use of medication were the most frequent risk factors identified in the 12 studies. Conclusions: Many Brazilian studies to date are descriptive and there are only a few case-control studies.
