Abstract

Introduction: Mandibular fractures are the most common type, compared to other facial fractures, the jaw is affected in up to 38% of cases, this due to its exposure and prominence in traumatic situations. The treatment of fractures is based on stabilization with the restoration of the occlusion prior to the injury and in some cases immobilization of the fracture¹. When these fractures are not treated in a timely manner, they cause sequelae, involving functions and aesthetics Objective: To describe open surgical treatment of a comminuted mandible fracture, through rigid internal fixation. Case report: A 24-year-old male patient, with a history of motorcycle accident, was admitted to the largest trauma hospital in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and evaluated by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology service of Hospital Santa Casa due to the hypothesis of a diagnosis of mandible fracture. The patient underwent open surgical treatment with rigid internal bone fixation with plates and screws. Conclusion: Surgery through rigid internal bone fixation with plates and screws is an advance in the treatment of fractures, with high success rates with early return of functions.
