Tooth Preparation in Denture Partial Fixed: Integrative Literature Review and Preparation Protocol

Abstract

Introduction: Dentist must follow a careful protocol during the tooth preparation, in order to obtain clinical success in the denture partial fixed rehabilitation. Objective: Review integrative literature and present a protocol for tooth preparation in denture partial fixed. Material and Method: The research was based on the PICO strategy. The research strategy in the PubMed and Lilacs databases, in portuguese and english, between 2010 and 2020. The research strategy in the databases was (("tooth preparation" OR "crown preparation") AND ("denture partial fixed")). Inclusion criteria were studies with full articles available; that dealt with the principles, techniques, and characteristics of the preparations. The exclusion criteria were articles that did not address the preparation for denture partial fixed; articles related to tooth sensitivity; articles about strength; studies on fiberglass reinforcement and resin viscosity for bond durability. The articles selection was based on titles and abstracts. After the selection, the data were extracted and analyzed. Finally, a protocol for dental preparation will be proposed. Results: 5 articles were selected, 2 prospective clinical studies and 3 randomized clinical studies. The silhouette technique was adopted in the protocol for dental preparation. Conclusion: The reviewed literature was scarce in relation to the subject study, a protocol for preparations in universally accepted or ideal fixed prosthesis was not identified and the results bring great variability in relation to the finish line end and convergence angle. The proposed preparation protocol was the silhouette technique, as it was widely disseminated in Brazil, reproduced by dentists and dental schools.
