Introduction: For the care of anxious patients during dental treatment, the use of benzodiazepines is a method of pharmacological control that allows a comfortable and safe care. Through this method, minimal sedation of consciousness can be obtained, but adverse effects can be associated with the use of these drugs. Objective: to carry out a literature review identifying the possible adverse effects triggered by benzodiazepines used as a method of pharmacological control of anxiety in dental practice. Material and method: The selected and analyzed articles were obtained through the Scielo, PubMed and CAPES Periodical databases. Results / Discussion: The adverse effects to the use of benzodiazepines for minimal sedation have a low occurrence, and the most recognized by the literature are: anterograde amnesia, sexual hallucinations, drowsiness, in addition to paradoxical effects such as excitement, aggressiveness and irritability. Conclusion: It is important that the dentist is trained to use the use of benzodiazepines in a sensible and responsible manner, selecting the most appropriate drug for the appropriate situation.
