Introduction: Recognizing the profile of users who access the service in a direct and referenced way can help to plan the flow and counterflow strategies to ensure a more efficient and quality service. Objective: To analyze the factors associated with direct or referenced pursuit of the triage service for COVID-19 in a reference hospital institution. Material and method: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study fulfilled with 358 users who sought treatment triage for COVID-19. The dependent variable considered was the pursuit method, direct or referenced, and the independent variables were the sociodemographic characteristics, health, travel history, access to other health services, contact with suspects, signs and symptoms and clinical care conduct. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: The majority went after the service directly (78.2% n=280) and was associated with young and adult people, married, with complete higher education and living in the same municipality as the reference institution, with milder symptoms, such as sore throat, nasal congestion and coryza (p<0.05). Those who sought the service in a referenced way (21.8% n=78) were mostly elderly and with chronic diseases, who needed medical evaluation and observation and longer hospitalization (p<0.05). Conclusion: The profile of users who pursuited the COVID-19 triage service in a referenced way was individuals from a group considered at risk and with more severe signs and symptoms of the disease and who required hospital care, while the direct search was motivated for less gravity.
