Abstract

Surgical resections for the treatment of sinus carcinomas cause severe changes in appearance, interfering with patients' self-esteem and inducing them to social isolation. Rehabilitation with maxillofacial prostheses is the preferred treatment modality in cases of tumors with high recurrence rates in which surgical correction is contraindicated, as it improves aesthetics and attenuates chewing, swallowing and phonation difficulties. This article aims to report a case of rehabilitation using maxillary obturator prosthesis in a patient who underwent partial maxillectomy that resulted in oroantral communication. A 32-year-old male patient sought dental care after exeresis of a rare sinosal carcinoma. After anamnesis, intra and extra-oral examinations and radiographic analysis, the confection of a removable upper partial denture with palatal obturator was planned. After molding the upper arch, the study model was obtained and taken to the parallelometer, and the metallic frame of the removable partial denture was planned. Niches and compensatory wear were performed and then the work molding, originating the working model on which the metallic frame was made. After the metallic frame test and occlusal registration, the models were set on the semi-adjustable articulator, the teeth were selected and assembled. In the aesthetic and functional test, phonetic and aesthetic restoration of the patient was achieved. Then, molding with closed mouth, acrylization, installation and preservation of the prosthesis were performed. It is concluded that palatal obturator prosthesis seals the bucosinusal communication and promotes improvements in aesthetics, phonetics and mastication, restoring self-confidence and resocialization the patient.
