Drug protocols for the treatment of a disease are defined based on large studies and comparisons about different drugs and their mechanism of action. The emergency need for a protocol for the treatment of Covid-19 created differences among researchers in the defense or not of using some antimicrobials. This literature review was based on 37 articles published from 2015 to 2021 on the use of Azithromycin and on Covid-19. Despite having good antiviral and immunomodulating activity, Azithromycin still does not have well-established clinical evidence as to its success in combating the Sars-CoV-2 virus, and the risk-benefit should be better evaluated.
