Erupted Compound Odontome in the Jaw: Diagnosis and Treatment

Introduction: Odontomas are considered a type of odontogenic tumor hamartoma (developmental anomaly), with still uncertain etiology, being asymptomatic and discovered by routine exams, it is one of the most common tumors in the oral cavity. Objective: The objective of the present work is to present a case report of a compound odontoma erupted in the mandible, analyzing its diagnosis and treatment. Methodology: This article reviews the literature on it, followed by a clinical case reported on compound odontoma in the anterior region of the mandible. Case Report: A 22-year-old male patient attended the Dental Specialties Center (CEO) in Fernandópolis/SP, referred by an orthodontist. The extraoral examination revealed nothing noteworthy. The intraoral examination revealed multiple whitish masses in the lingual region of teeth 33, 34 and 35, without painful symptoms. The panoramic radiographic examination brought by the patient showed the presence of a set of structures similar to teeth, of variable shape and size, surrounded by a radiolucent zone, suggesting the diagnosis of compound odontoma. Computed tomography was requested to assist in planning the surgical intervention. The material collected during surgery was sent for anatomopathological analysis and the definitive diagnosis was compound odontoma. Conclusion: It is concluded that the early diagnosis of Compound Odontoma allows greater chances of successful surgical interventions, avoiding major complications, and thus allowing an adequate healing process, sparing noble structures and a complete rehabilitation of the patient's oral health.
