Viscosupplementation with Hyaluronic Acid for Rhizarthrosis Management

The thumb basal joint arthritis is a common condition in the daily practice of orthopedists and hand surgeons. It is a common condition in post-menopausal middle-aged women. Non-operative treatment is the first line of therapy and surgical management is indicated in its failure. However, some patients do not want surgical procedures, and infiltration with hyaluronic acid is an alternative. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcome of treatment with hyaluronic acid infiltration in patients with thumb basal joint arthritis (TBJA). Methods: 38 patients undergoing treatment with hyaluronic acid infiltration for TBJA were retrospectively evaluated, and their variables were analyzed. Results: There was an improvement with a statistical difference for Pinch (Pulp: p=0.001; Lateral: p=0.001 and Tripod p=0.001), Grip strength (mean p=0.002), VAS (p=0.001), quick-DASH (p =0.01) and palmar abduction (p=0.001). PRWE showed an improvement tendency (p=0.067). Conclusion: the management with hyaluronic acid infiltration is safe in patients who fail conservative treatment and who do not want surgical treatment.
