Abstract

The Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma is an injury considered one of the most common oral pathologies, it occurs almost exclusively in the attached gingiva and usually involves the interdental papilla. Its etiology is unclear, but some irritating gingival factors, such as dental calculus, poorly adapted prostheses, are considered as possible causal factors. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and the lesion presents as a striking histopathological finding, with the presence of calcifications of various shapes and sizes. The objective of this article is to report a clinical case of peripheral ossifying fibroma, its clinical characteristics, treatment and histopathological findings. It was concluded that POF is a reactive, nodular and asymptomatic gingival lesion, which clinically may appear similar to other lesions such as pyogenic granuloma, requiring histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis and clinical follow-up, since if the approach surgery is not adequate and the irritating factors are not completely removed, the chance of recurrence of the lesion is high.
