Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs used to prevent and treat bone diseases such as osteoporosis. While bisphosphonates are effective in treating these conditions, they can also have unwanted side effects such as osteonecrosis of the maxillary/jaw and other conditions. Articles indexed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS) Dentistry databases were retrieved. A search was carried out, previously establishing a period of 5 years (2018 to 2022), to identify a more current panorama on the subject. The criteria used for inclusion of publications were: Brazilian scientific articles with full text available, publication in the period from 2018 to 2022, containing an expression in the title, keywords and/or abstract that the text referred to the interaction of bisphosphonates with dental implants. Review articles were discarded, as well as those from dissertations and theses. The query to the SciELO platform database, PubMed and BVS Odontologia and the application of search strategies resulted in 12 articles. Given the findings, one article (8.3%) is from 2018, six (50%) are from 2019, two (16.6%) are from 2020, one (8.3%) from 2021 and one (8.3%) from 2022. The articles that made up the final sample were organized. It was evident that the selected articles address the following topics associated with implants and bisphosphonates: osteonecrosis of the mandible/maxilla (38%), menopause (8%), type 2 diabetes mellitus (8%), osseointegration (8%), stability of implants (15%), osteoblasts (8%), bone graft (8%). Given these findings, health professionals must be aware of patients using bisphosphonates to inform them of the potential risks and benefits of surgical procedures such as dental implants.
