Abstract

Chemotherapy, an important cancer treatment, can cause side effects by inaccurate inhibition of cell growth. Oral mucositis emerges as a prominent oral complication, causing acute irritation, discomfort and reduced quality of life, affecting sleep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the existence of potential sleep disorders in pediatric cancer patients with oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological survey, which uses secondary data from a previous study that covered 30 patients aged between 0 and 19 years. A data collection form and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-BR) questionnaire were used. Data were evaluated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, using a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05). After analyzing the data, it was found that 63.3% of the patients were male, 46.7% belonged to the brown ethnicity and 63.3% lived at home with parents and siblings. In addition, sleep quality was rated as good by 66.7% of participants. A moderate positive correlation was identified between age group and sleep quality (p<0.01). Future studies, with larger samples, are essential to confirm findings in young people with cancer and apply them in professional practice, expanding evidence and improving patients' quality of life.
