Abstract

Background: Rhizarthrosis is a degenerative disease of the thumb base joint, common in orthopedic practice and more prevalent in females. Non-surgical treatment has high resolution; however, in its failure, several techniques have been described with similar results. This study aims to retrospectively evaluate the functional outcomes of three different surgical approaches to manage rhizarthrosis. Methods: a retrospective study of patients with rhizarthrosis who underwent surgical treatment at the Hospital das Clínicas complex of the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo between January 2020 and December 2023. Results: The functional outcome of the 65 patients who underwent surgical treatment using three different techniques showed a statistical difference for proximal migration of the thumb and for the functional outcome at 12 months; however, there was no postoperative functional difference in the patients in the study population. Conclusions: Despite the changes observed, there is no statistical difference in the type of technique to be used in the studied population considering the functional outcomes.
