Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Literature Review

Trans-surgical bacterial infections more easily affect patients with poor health, such as immunosuppressed and uncompensated diabetics. Antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) is considered an ally in these cases, with the use of antibiotics before or soon after the procedure. In this literature review, databases with publications on AP in oral and maxillofacial surgery were analyzed, correlating oral microbioma and antibiotics. In conclusion, antibiotics are fundamental in the prevention of infections and anamnesis is essential to, through the patient's medical history, determine the need for BP. New studies must be carried out to standardize a consensus on drug protocols.
