Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder and it can impair in social interaction and motor skills. Caregivers of children with this disorder may have difficulty performing their oral hygiene. Discrete trial teaching (DTT) divides learning into series of trials and is effective in learning for children with ASD. Objective: To use DTT to train parents or guardians of children with ASD about the oral hygiene of these children. Material and Method: This is a clinical trial of prevention with 26 children with ASD, between 3 and 6 years old, monitored at Instituto de Medina Integral Professor Fernando Figueira. In the first meeting, the parents or guardians answered a form with sociodemographic variables and plaque accumulation was asessed using the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (IHOS). A pamphlet based on the DTT with the brushing sequence was also given those responsible and they were trained for its application. A new meeting was held after 7 days to adjust difficulties and a new questionnaire and IHOS were applied at 30 days. Results: More than half of the children (65.4%) had less dental plaque accumulation after the intervention. The decrease in plaque accumulation was associated with flossing (p= 0.045) and the child's gender (p= 0.015). Conclusion: The DTT helps in the oral hygiene routine in children with ASD.
