Abstract

A sense of belonging within the university environment has been linked to positive personal and educational outcomes. Serving as a pillar of support and a safeguard for the continuation of studies, student housing also acts as a vital space for community building and social cohesion; it fosters bonds and connections among students and strengthens their sense of belonging, thereby significantly impacting their engagement, integration, and academic performance. Given that the challenges inherent in communal living and shared spaces within student housing can shape relational and socio-spatial dynamics—either facilitating or hindering the living experience and potentially compromising academic progress, the reduction of inequalities, and the health and well-being of residents-this study aims to reflect on community ties within university student housing. This work is guided by the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being; SDG 4: Quality Education; and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities).
