Abstract

Background: Distal radius fractures are the most common fractures in the upper limbs, with a bimodal pattern by low-energy trauma in elderly patients and high-energy trauma in young patients. In cases involving articular involvement and distal comminution, the choice of implant for surgical treatment becomes challenging for orthopedic surgeons and hand surgeons. In this context, the dorsal spanning plate has been used as an option with good functional outcomes for these fractures. Methods: A retrospective study conducted in a tertiary hospital through a review of medical records from 2020 to 2024 of patients with AO/OTA 2R3C3 distal radius fractures treated with a dorsal spanning plate of the LCP 3.5mm type. Results: There was a predominance of male patients, with high-energy trauma being the most common, and traffic accidents responsible for 80% of the cases. Patients were evaluated after implant removal using the Quick-Dash score, Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAS), and Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), all presenting satisfactory results. Conclusion: Given the difficulties encountered in treating complex distal radius fractures, the spanning plate presents a good option for the surgical management of these fractures.
